NHS Suffolk is participating in a project to implement the Summary Care Record (SCR), an element of the NHS Care Records Service, to enable us to provide you with better care.
The NHS Summary Care Record is a secure electronic summary of a patient’s key health information that will be available to authorised healthcare staff treating them in the NHS across England.
It will initially have information about your medications, any allergies you suffer from and any bad reactions to medicines that you experience. Over time it will build to include information about any health issues your GP considers important to your wellbeing.
In alignment with national strategy, NHS Suffolk is committed to the implementatin of the SCR and the resulting benefits it delivers with improving the flow of patient information between different elements of the NHS. Following the NHS Suffolk Public Information Programme relating to SCR and its implementation, concerns have been raised by GPs in Suffolk over the levels of public awareness about SCRs and the "implied consent to upload" model. This has led NHS Suffolk to reconsider the implementation timescale for SCR. As a result of this, a revised implementation plan will be issued when resource availability allows.
Once imlemented the SCR will play an important role in improving the quality of healthcare delivered to patients in the NHS, especially in urgent and unscheduled care situations where often little or no patient information would be available to guide health care professionals. Healthcare staff will only be permitted to access information if they are involved in your treatment, with access to your record being controlled by strict security measures.
If you are registered with a GP Practice you will have received an information pack (if you were aged 15 years 9 months and over on 10 March 2010) consisting of:
We have also arranged a number of opportunities for you to talk face-to-face with NHS advisers who will be available at your GP Practice over the coming weeks. Please attend at a venue and time convenient to you. There is no need to make an appointment.
You can also find more information by contacting Suffolk's Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 389 6819 or by email at pals@suffolkpct.nhs.uk.
