During the 6th European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (22 - 28 January) women In Suffolk are being urged not to ignore their invitation to cervical screening (smear test).
Hossein Khaled, NHS Suffolk’s public health screening lead said: “Every year almost 3,000 women in the country are diagnosed with cervical cancer and it is the second most common cancer in women aged under 35.
“The symptoms of cervical cancer are not always obvious and it may not cause any symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage.
“However, if it is diagnosed early the cancer can usually be successfully treated – this is why it is so important women take up the offer of a smear test.
“In Suffolk, women will be invited for a smear test from their 25th birthday and then every three years until 50. Between the ages of 50 – 64 women will be invited to a screening every five years.
“The screening process is simple and painless and most women will attend their GP practice and have the test carried out by a practice nurse.
